Review of "TALES" by Chris
TALES: I remember what a powerful impact this film had on me earlier this year. This was and remains a breakthrough movie in many ways. The conjugated effect of DJ Mysh's melancholy music and Adrian's opening interview is truly electric. You know right there from the start this is going to be different from all previous gay porn and you're about to embark on a very special journey. It is the logical consequence of Robert Boggs' love for his models, all of them, that he wishes the viewers to share in this closeness and loving attention. They are all different, and all equally interesting and exciting. No wonder then that the behind-the-scenes segment is entirely silent : all the atmospheric work formerly entrusted to the extra sequence is now firmly embedded in the movie itself, with a resulting endless play between reality and fiction, real person and character. Never was a publicity release so true: "These are the guys you dream about. You see them just once and they change your live forever." This was also the first time Boggs attempted a collection of "short stories" and it is remarkable that, with the sole exception of the final tale, every story is more explicitly scripted than most of his previous feature-long narratives. The current BUDDIES series is in fact already there potentially. Finally, this is one incredible homage to Adam Kubick, a wonderful welcome back, with the most amazing display of his unique qualities that are forever identified with the universe of Robert Boggs.
